A matter of inches

The more you use Photoshop, the more you find little issues with the software. For example, Photoshop lets you set the default unit of measurement for almost everything:

Almost everything.

If you live outside the USA, you may have noticed that the default unit of measurement for Document Size is centimeters:

But when your document resolution is set to pixels per inch, which is the common setting, you might also want your document size to be in inches. Even though Canada went metric a long time ago, many (most?) printers, designers and corporate clients still use inches.

Inches make a champion.    – Vince Lombardi

Adobe lets you change this unit of measurement to inches by using the dropdown menu in the Document Size dialog box. But if you need to use inches over and over again, constantly changing the dropdown menu is a nuisance. Sadly, Photoshop doesn’t let you change the default setting.

If you want inches rather than centimeters then you have to take matters into your own hands.

On a Mac computer, (I will assume Windows is somewhat similar), go to System Preferences > Language & Region > Advanced… and change Measurement Units to US. Restart your computer.

Be aware that this change to inches may affect other software too.

If we take care of the inches, we will not have to worry about the miles.

– Hartley Coleridge, 19th century English poet
