This January 28th is the annual, international Data Privacy Day, also known as Data Protection Day. The date commemorates the 1981 signing of Convention 108 which deals with privacy and data protection.
Just for fun, the University of British Columbia is having a privacy awareness contest for its staff and faculty members. The contest winner gets an iPad. In exchange for the prize, the contest rules say the university can use the winner’s name and photo in any media for all eternity.
Professional photographers should remember that they are required to have a privacy policy. When it comes to collecting and safeguarding customer data, photographers must be aware of both provincial and federal law. Customer data could include such things as contact information, credit card and other financial information, estimate and invoice information, and photographs.
